STRENGTHS OF KIDS WITH DOWNS SYNDROME

STRENGTHS OF KIDS WITH DOWNS SYNDROME

Our children face difficulties in learning.

We need to accept this fact.

THE REASONS ARE;

      Delayed milestones

      Delayed self help skills.

      Slower messaging system.

      Difficulty in understanding cause & effect phenomenon.

      Difficulty in logical and complex thinking

      Short concentration span

      Difficulty in staying on task and multitasking.

      More distracted by other factors

      Visual difficulties to some degree

      Difficulty in hearing and difficulty in discriminating similar sounds.

Difficulty in;

      Memorizing sequences

       Retaining instructions

       Learning new vocabulary and information.

       Difficulty in transferring recently learnt information to long term memory.

Low muscle tone & loose ligaments leads to difficulty in achieving fine & gross motor skills;

       Difficulty in writing

       Difficulty in speech

       Body balance & gait

       Exercise

       Physical activities

       Difficulty to swallow

Associated medical ailments like;

       Respiratory congestion

       Thyroid gland malfunctions

       Congenital cardiac anomaly

       Auditory malfunction

       Other Immunity related issues.

SCARED?

DO NOT WORRY

OUR CHILDREN ARE GIFTED WITH NUMEROUS ABILITIES TOO!!

WE JUST NEED TO KNOW THEM

&

THEY CAN WIN

THE STRENGTHS OF OUR CHILDREN

Strong visual skills

Ability to learn and use sign & gesture

To learn to read and use the written word.

Learn well from demonstrations and visual resources

FLASHCARDS

Movies

Concrete materials

Strong receptive vocabulary

Keen to communicate and socialize with others

Tendency to copy behavior and attitudes from peers and adults

Our children’s minds can be programmed very well because;

      They do not get fed up with routine.

       They enjoy following TIME-TABLES.

       They happily do repetitive, monotonous work.

       Their schedule can be structured effectively.

       They take assigned work responsibly.

Programming

RIGHT PROGRAMMING

HELPS

OUR CHILDREN

TO LEARN BETTER,

FASTER

AND

MEANINGFUL

THE WORD PROGRAMMING IN TECHNICAL LANGUAGE MEANS,

INPUT-PROCESSING-OUTPUT

IT IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FOR OUR KIDS

INPUT MEANS GOAL TO BE ACHIEVED

PUT PUT MEANS
REPITITION BY;

CHARTS

FLASHCARDS

AUDIO-VISUALS

PHOTOS

PICTURES

DEMONSTRATIONS

YOU WILL SEE A MAGICAL OUTPUT

MOST IMPORTANT THING TO KEEP IN MIND

OUR CHILDREN REMEMBER THINGS EVEN IF THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND IT.

AND ONE MORE THING……

LEARNING DIFFICULTIES ARE THERE

AND THEY CAN BE OVERCOME BY CONSISTENT EFFORTS

BUT……BUT……

LEARNING-DELEARNING AND RELEARNING

IS

VERY VERY DIFFICULT

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT

TO

MAKE THEM LEARN CONCEPTUALLY

AND

THROUGH PROPER

CHANNELS

PROGRAMMING NEED TO BE

THOUGHTFUL

&

EFFECTIVE

Set a schedule and follow it effectively:

 NOW AS WE KNOW THE STRENGTHS OF OUR KIDS YOU NEED TO;
  1. Make a list of things you want your child should learn. This should be appropriate for child's age and present status of milestones achieved.
  2. Select the activities suitable to you & your child, material you want to use, methods those are most suitable to you & your child & suitable time of day suitable to you & your child.
  3. As we all know our kids are excellent copy-cats, they will repeat those things that they observe us doing. Use this tendency as a strength.
  4. Divide all the activities & make boxes for each day.
  5. Setting a timetable & making charts for different daily activities help a lot. Our children enjoy following timetable.
  6. Pin-up boards are very effective.
  7. Remember, repetition is the most important aspect of learning.
  8. Spare time for activities DAILY....!
 OUR CHILDREN ARE DIFFERENT
 WE JUST NEED TO KNOW THEM & SUPPORT THEM

THANK YOU

WE JUST NEED TO KNOW THEM AND SUPPORT THEM
